Combines setting rotary massy to cut grass seed and red clover

Try to set the concaves as wide open as you can, while still separating the seed thru, and maintain the slowest rotor speed you can while maintaing a fair ground speed. These crops usually thresh fairly easily, so if you're in good shape internally, this should be fairly easy to find. The idea is to avoid tearing up trash as much as possible, keeping load off the shoe. You might see a little rotor loss doing this if you hit weeds, etc. but it won't be as bad as a shoe loss would be.If you're using vine knives on the rotor, you might consider removing most of them, at least on the front of the rotor over the concave area. You might consider using an airfoil chaffer. A number of folks are using them in all models of combine for fine seeds as well as all other crops. They will allow you to use some air for cleaning, instead of using the chaffer fingers to scalp out seed like a comb, usually delivering a cleaner sample and saving more lbs. at the same time. Otherwise, consider covering about the front 10" of the chaffer with heavy cardboard, etc. (something flexible so the chaffer can still be adjusted). This will keep trash from forcing thru the front, and should enable you to open the chaffer somewhat to allow the fingers to project upward in order to agitate the seed from the trash. Also, with wider openings, some air can be used as well since you won't see air speeded up at the surface from the venturi effect of pinching down the slotsIf you're using an adjustable chaffer, a finishing screen will help. The openings can be somewhat larger than the size of the seed. Call JandK sales of Hebron, Ne. (402) 365-4393 and talk to James Vorderstrasse. He builds these items. Hope all this helps,
