In your cereal grains you may not need any knives installed. If you're getting good thresh and the grain is separating well, you need to avoid tearing up trash as much as possible in order to lessen shoe load. In canola you need just enough of them to keep the stalks moving and to break them up somewhat to prevent wrapping on the rear of the rotor--depending upon conditions, we've found that usually they're only needed at the rearmost portion of the rotor. Knives are installed mostly for breaking up viny crops which could wrap, such as long green stemmed bean vines.
