Canadian farmers want all levels of government to place a higher priority on cutting red tape.

That?s according to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business.

The Federation?s Virginia Labbie says she recently talked to an Ontario member of the organisation about the issue.

Labbie says 23 per cent of the farmers the CFIB surveyed said they may not have gone into business if they?d known about the burden of regulations they?d be facing.

She says CFIB farmer and agribusiness members feel red tape is becoming both a competitive issue and a potential roadblock to farm succession.

Almost a quarter of the farmers involved in a recent survey say they may not have gotten into the business if they knew how much of a regulatory burden they were going to be facing.

That?s according to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business.

The Federation?s Virginia Labbie says their farmer members argue there is a difference between unnecessary red tape and necessary regulation.

Labbie says more than 70 per cent of the CFIB?s farmer members put cutting red tape at the top of their list of wants from all levels of government.

She argues that with a large number of farmers nearing retirement now is a good time to start cleaning up that red tape to make it easier to attract new farmers to the industry.
