While the growth of the U.S. and Canada sow herds is relatively flat, pork producers are doing a great job of saving piglets and feeding out pigs efficiently.

A Canadian market analyst says that efficiency is a significant story in U.S., North America and European hog production.

Victor Aideyan, senior risk management consultant with Farms.com in Ontario, and two other agricultural economists gave their reactions to the USDA December Hogs and Pigs Report. They spoke at a news media teleconference sponsored by the Pork Checkoff on Dec. 23.

Aideyan said genetics, pigs per litter, and herd management have resulted in a steady increase in efficiency.

"We are doing a lot more with relatively less pigs," he said. "We are getting tremendous efficiency out of the herd."

The U.S. Quarterly Hogs and Pigs Report estimated a U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs on Dec. 1, 2011 at 65.9 million head.

That number was 2 percent higher than a year ago, but down 1 percent from Sept. 1, 2011.
