We have a 1020 with 1.5" and have had similar problem. The sickle must be kept sharp, the gaurd clearance must be .030 to .090, and the gaurds must be square on the shoulders where they cut. We replace all the sections every year and all the gaurds every three. We cut about 500 acres of beans so it gets quite a bit of wear. Hope this helps.
