Nick, You mentioned removing a retaining nut on the shaft.Did you remove the setscrew from the drumIJOr, is this the retaining nut you are talking aboutIJOn this age of combine,the setscrews were usually the tapered type that would lock into a drilling in the shaft.(Make sure you take the setscrew all the way out.)Also,sometimes the drum will have put a small groove in the splines that is hard to see.(Have had to use a Dremel tool and remove groove from each spline.)A combination of the above and heat and penetrating oil to breakdown any rust on the splines is also helpful.You can either replace wheel cylinder complete(n71131065),or install a repair kit(n71131103)which includes boot cups and spring.Hope this helps,don't give up.
