Zero Motorcycles, the global leader in the electric motorcycle industry, today announced that the company will pay for the first 25,000* miles of electricity when riders purchase a new 2012 Zero through the end of May. Zero launched the promotion to highlight the 2012 lineup’s incredible efficiency and how inexpensive each model is to operate. The promotion is timed to generate additional interest and awareness as Zero Motorcycles kicks off its first ever National Demo Day event this coming weekend on Saturday, May 19, 2012.

“With rising gas prices and the summer riding season just around the corner, we want riders to enjoy an exceptionally fun and carefree summer of riding on a new Zero. The fact that Zero Motorcycles can offer to pay for the energy for the first 25,000 miles of riding helps to highlight the incredible efficiency of our entire lineup. We invite interested riders to schedule a demo ride at this weekend’s National Demo Day to both experience the ride and learn more about Zero Motorcycles,” said John Lloyd, vice president of global sales, Zero Motorcycles.

Researchers Tomoji Takasu and Akio Yasuda of Tokyo University have developed an open source, inexpensive, Real Time Kinematic (RTK) GPS receiver than runs on a beagle board. They've also left instructions on how you can build one yourself.

Unlike traditional GPS, RTK-GPS doesn't measure the delay between its signal and the the signal received by a satellite—instead it measures the shorter wavelengths in the satellite's carrier signal. This can mean accuracies within one centimeter, but there are difficulties with aligning signals with RTK, and the need for multiple receivers makes the technology impractical for navigation. This is why the technology is most widely used in land surveying.

A group of university students in the US is aiming to break a North American record by creating a car that can travel more than 1400km on one litre...

A group of university students in the US is aiming to break a North American record by creating a car that can travel more than 1400km on one litre of fuel – equivalent to fuel consumption of just 0.071 litres of fuel per 100km.

Competing in its first SAE International Supermileage Challenge, the University of Michigan’s Supermileage Team is nearing completion of its single-person, super-fuel-efficient car that is powered by a single-cylinder Briggs & Stratton lawn mower engine.

The current record stands at 3169mpg (0.074L/100km), but the Ann Arbor-based team is aiming to better that by reaching 3300mpg (0.071L/100km).

While the team’s chief engineer and co-founder, Brett Merkel admits you won’t see a car on the street capable of achieving 3300mpg in the short-term, he says the technology is heading in that direction.

“Fuel efficiency is one of those issues prevalent in society today,” Merkel said.

“The technology we’re coming up with can have far-reaching effects, and be implemented in just a few years.”

The team has already had some success in this area, with the fuel injection system developed for the vehicle by mechanical engineering student and team member Lihang Nong now the focus of technology company PicoSpray.

Merkel says Nong’s fuel injection system has the potential to reduce the price of single-person vehicles like motorcycles and scooters by 70 per cent, and create 50 times fewer emissions than current engines.

The CME Group says the Chicago Board of Trade will now offer grain and oilseed futures and options trading 21 hours a day, pending certification by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

According to a statement by the CME Group, customer feedback led to an adjustment from the earlier plan for a 22-hour trading day, saying trade between 5 PM to 2 PM Central from Sunday through Friday best meets customer’s risk management needs. The CBOT parent company says the new plan came through collaboration with the National Grain and Feed Association and the North American Export Grain Association.

The Kansas City Board of Trade is also set to offer a 21-hour trading day as both exchanges compete with the recent introduction of expanded grain futures trade by the Intercontinental Exchange. The KCBT plan would go into effect May 31, pending CFTC approval. The CME Group has not given a start day for its’ expanded trading day.

The National Corn Growers Association is requesting the Commodity Futures Trading Commission require a 30-day public comment period before major grain exchanges expand their trading hours. In a letter to CFTC Chair Gary Gensler released late Wednesday, NCGA President Gary Niemeyer says a 22-day hour trading day for the CME Group and Intercontinental Exchange would place the nation’s corn growers at a marketing disadvantage, especially when many are busy planting.

7 Causes for Corn Emergence Problems

Corn planting is nearing completion in Ohio. Across the state and within localized areas, corn is at a range of growth stages. Some of the corn planted in April is showing up to 4 leaf collars but in later-planted fields, corn is still emerging. Troubleshooting emergence problems early is critical in identifying solutions and developing successful replant plans, if needed. Here are a few common things to look for if you encounter an emergence problem in corn this spring. (Some of this information has been adapted from a newsletter article written by Greg Roth, at Penn State several years ago.)

No seed present.May be due to planter malfunction or bird or rodent damage. The latter often will leave some evidence such as digging or seed or plant parts on the ground.
Coleoptile(shoot) unfurled, leafing-out underground.Could be due to premature exposure to light in cloddy soil, planting too deep, compaction or soil crusting, extended exposure to acetanilide herbicides under cool wet conditions, combinations of several of these factors or may be due to extended cool wet conditions alone.
Seed with poorly developed radicle (root) or coleoptile/coleoptile tip brown or yellow.Could be seed rots or seed with low vigor. Although corn has just started to emerge or has not yet emerged, growers should carefully inspect seedlings for symptoms of disease, especially in lower-lying areas of fields where ponding and saturated soils were more likely. Seeds and seedlings that are brown in color, are soft and fall apart easily while digging are obviously dead or dying. Seeds and seedling roots or shoots that have a weft of white to pinkish mold growing on them are likely victims of fungal attack and will likely die. Pythium and fusarium are common fungi that attack plants and cause these damping-off or seedling blight symptoms under wet, cool conditions. It is more difficult to diagnose disease damage on plants that also show abnormal growth caused by cold soil conditions or by crusting of the soil surface. However, dark, discolored roots and crowns, instead of a healthy creamish-white appearance, are typical symptoms of seedling diseases problems. So, it is best to check these seedlings very closely for dark brown or soft areas on seedling roots and shoots. Any discoloration will indicate a problem that could worsen if the soils remain cold or wet.
Seed has swelled but not sprouted.Often poor seed-to-soil contact or shallow planting- seed swelled then dried out. Check seed furrow closure in no-till. Seed may also not be viable.
Skips associated with discolored and malformed seedlings. May be herbicide damage. Note depth of planting and herbicides applied compared with injury symptoms such as twisted roots, club roots or purple plants.
Seeds hollowed out.Seed corn maggot or wireworm. Look for evidence of the pest to confirm.
Uneven emergence.May be due to soil moisture and temperature variability within the seed zone. Poor seed to soil contact caused by cloddy soils. Soil crusting. Other conditions that result in uneven emergence already noted above, including feeding by various grub species.

The World Pork Expo is in Des Moines on June 6-8. While it is the major equipment and allied industry show for US producers, it is growing in importance to the international production community. Each year sees growth in the number of foreign visitors.

Foreign visitors come for a variety of reasons. Our Canadian neighbors attend because their production systems, methods and problems are similar to ours. In addition, there are many production links across the border, both for pigs and for allied support services. Technology transfer between the US and Canadian industry occurs daily and both countries have benefited.

The Chinese are increasing their presence at World Pork Expo. The first Chinese visitors were brought over by groups doing business in China, such as the American Soybean Association and US Feed Grains Council. As the Chinese industry modernizes, many US companies are bringing their Chinese partners over for a look at US production technology.

As you walk the trade show at Expo, another interesting foreign group are companies trying to sell to US producers. The Chinese are evident with such materials as woven wire flooring and other products that may compete with US made goods based on price, just as Chinese made clothing, TV’s, etc. compete with US goods in retailers such as WalMart.

Here in the Midwest, we’re aware of the Chinese every time they make a major purchase of feed grains. Their very large purchases of US corn and soybean are often market movers. US corn and soybean producers are aggressively pursuing this foreign market by sending pork, poultry and even aquatic production experts over there. The goal – increase use of feed grains for protein production.

Deere & Co. (DE-N72.85-1.33-1.79%) posted higher quarterly earnings and sales that topped estimates and raised its full-year profit outlook on Wednesday on rising global demand for farm equipment.

The U.S. farm sector is booming on higher worldwide food demand and as biofuels help drive up crop production. Companies like Deere are benefiting from record-high farm income that is spurring farmers to update their equipment.

“Deere is hitting on all cylinders,” said Gary Bradshaw, portfolio manager at Hodges Capital in Dallas.

Sales increased by double digits in the agriculture, and construction and forestry equipment divisions during the quarter.

“Trying to feed everyone, and with more folks going into the middle class that want to eat more meat and protein, you need to feed more cattle and hogs and plant more corn, milo and wheat,” Mr. Bradshaw said. With commodities prices up, farmers’ “pockets are full and they tend to run and buy more equipment.”

The world’s largest farm equipment maker said fiscal second-quarter net income rose to $1.056-billion, or $2.61 per share, from $904.3-million, or $2.12 a share, a year ago. The results topped the average estimate of $2.53, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Net sales of equipment operations rose to $9.4-billion from $8.33-billion a year earlier. Worldwide net sales and revenues increased 12 per cent to $10.01-billion in the quarter, above the average estimate of $9.7-billion.

The company also raised its forecast for 2012 net income to about $3.35-billion from $3.275-billion.

Deere’s shares erased premarket gains to trade 0.7 per cent lower at $76.04 early on the New York Stock Exchange.

Hemisphere GPS announced the new AgJunction Mobile for iOS, an enhancement to AgJunction, its precision agriculture data services platform.

AgJunction Mobile is an in-field data collection system featuring GPS-enabled boundary mapping and soil sampling. To take advantage of the latest technologies, AgJunction and Cogent3D, maker of PrecisionEarth, have come together to release AgJunction Mobile for iOS. Available for both iPhone and iPad, AgJunction Mobile for iOS is based on the PrecisionEarth platform with the time saving enhancement of being able to directly sync with the AgJunction cloud system.

AgJunction users can download the app from the App Store and enter their AgJunction license key, user name and password. From there, the application will automatically manage the two-way transfer of data between AgJunction Mobile and the AgJunction cloud system, eliminating the need to move data files manually.

With the first release of AgJunction Mobile for iOS, users will be able to synchronize data based on their growers, farms, fields, field boundaries, and directed sample locations. Users can then add new farms and fields as well as map field boundaries and soil sample locations. Recorded field data is automatically synchronized with the AgJunction cloud system for use in the field, back at the office, or through an agriculture service provider.
