I'd Fork lift or pallet jack feeder house out from machine ,while working on it support it. Pretty much got to strip it all and start again with new shaft. good luck

Another possible cause of shaft breakage is the lH variable speed belt not adjusted properly. Remember you should have a hack saw blades width between lower sheaves when variable speed is in slowest position. I would remove belts from both sides and remove RH drive tire(Use jack stands for support!).Disassemble and remove feeder chain and anti-wrap shields.loosen setscrews holding sprockets to shaft(May have to use heat as they are loctited). Remove drive sheave and slip clutch from RH side and reinstall a 1_2"x1" bolt in end of shaft.Using a sledge hammer, drive shaft to the left far enough to rotate RH bearing and remove from housing.We then usually break outer bearing race on lH bearing(Wear eye protection!)and then remove shaft from RH side. Aftermarket shafts are available from AandI Products. Install new shaft in feeder house,installing sprockets on shaft so the setscrews line up,far enough to install RH bearing in housing and apply loctite to shaft and bring shaft back to the right installing in bearing. An air hammer works slick,lightly vibrating on bearing while someone applys pressure to shaft. Bring shaft to the left until it bottoms against shoulder on shaft. Install lH bearing using loctite and again using an air hammer to drive bearing on shaft.Reassemble RH drive sheave and slip clutch asy. and reinstall drive tire.Make sure you re-pack bearings in variable speed header drive asy. We usually drill a hole through piston to install a grease zerk so variable speed can be greased without disassembly. Reinstall anti-wrap shields and feeder chain.Reinstall drive belts and you should be back in business.(2-3 hr job if you have done it before.) Hyper Harvest II

H.H. II, Thanks for your detailed instructions. They were a big help. You have saved me alot of time and frustration. We got the broken shaft out and got a new one. Turned out the reason it broke was the bearing inside the v.s. hub was totally shot and caused way to much movement. Also something of interest was the shaft in our N-5 must have been updated at some time because it is the same one that's used in the R60 and that vintage machine. It has the splines on the right hand side and not a slip clutch.Thanks again for all your help.
