SHERIDAN, Wyo. -- Construction of the popular Hunter Trailhead and Campground, approximately 15 miles west of Buffalo, Wyo. on the Powder River Ranger District, was completed recently. Visitors to the new facility will find new and improved overnight camping sites, better defined parking for vehicles and trailers and a separate site for the Authorized Outfitters and guides to pack up and head into the backcountry.

The project involved relocating the trailhead and campground out of the riparian area and away from the heavily traveled Forest Road 19, Hunter Road corridor. Parking and traffic flow have been improved for the safety of the visiting public. Also, there is new access to Soldier and Buffalo Parks. The new route will pass through the new trailhead, and just prior to the French Creek ditch, the route goes left and reconnects with the Soldier Park and Buffalo Park roads about ¾ of a mile west of the old Hunter Trailhead. Directions from Forest Road 19 will be left on Forest Road 396 for about ½ a mile and then left on Forest 394 to continue on to Soldier and Buffalo Parks.

The old Hunter Trailhead and campground are now closed. The road accessing the old Trailhead is also closed. Revegetation of the old roads and trailhead facility will be done as soon as possible, tentatively scheduled for this fall.

District Ranger Mark Booth stated, ?This new Trailhead and campground will greatly improve visitors experience at this popular developed facility.?

He also mentioned the new road and closing of the old routes directly west of Hunter Creek will greatly benefit water quality of Hunter Creek and the view from Hunter Road.
