Eggs come from wheat?

It used to be that tales of people?s ignorance about food origins and farm life could make farmers and ranchers smile indulgently and enjoy a mild ego boost about their superior knowledge.

Now it?s just plain scary.

A survey of young adults in Great Britain showed most 16 to 23-year-olds don?t know butter comes from a dairy cow and one in 10 thinks eggs come from wheat.

The results seem too bizarre to rate credence, but according to the Mail Online, the research was done by a charitable group called LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming.) It surveyed 2,000 people by asking them to match photos of milk, bacon and butter with photos of the animal or crop from which those products are produced.

Forty percent did not link milk with dairy cows. About 66 percent linked eggs to chickens but 11 percent instead linked eggs with wheat or corn. Only half correctly identified steak as coming from beef cattle.

The laughable kicker came in the last part of the Daily?s story: 43 percent of the youths said they considered themselves knowledgeable about food origins.

I?d like to think a similar survey of Canadian youths would yield much better results, but maybe those of us in agriculture are kidding ourselves about general familiarity with food sources. What do you think?
