    Do you work elsewhere too?

I don't work anywhere else, either. My wife likes to sew, so she makes different crafty things to sell on Etsy. It doesn't bring in a lot of extra income, but it does help us out.

    Time To Mouse Proof

I go around each winter and try to seal up holes in my buildings, but as you know, mice can fit into tiny holes, so even with my best efforts, they tend to get in. Keeping your barns as neat as you can will also help. I store my feed in metal containers with tight lids and keep trash and other...

    Needing a New Barn Cat

My diabetic cat has taken to living indoors rather well. I honestly worried it might be a harder adjustment on him than it seems to be. I would love another barn cat, though. My old guy used to do an amazing job of keeping the mice away. I'm going to look around and see if any of our local...

    Stress

When the weather is nice, I like to take a few hours to go fishing. It's very peaceful. When the weather is bad, though, that's not an option. In the winter, I'll watch a funny movie if I'm feeling particularly stressed out. Laughter is good medicine.

    Fishing

I love to fish. It is so peaceful, and it gives me time to sit and think for a while, to leave the chaos of everyday life behind for a bit. I've heard of some people catching some pretty crazy things while fishing. I even heard someone caught a coffee machine! The oddest thing I've caught while...

    Buying Back Family Farm Land

Yikes. I'm sorry you're facing such a tough situation. I don't know if there's anything you can legally do to get them to charge you a fair price, but I would consult a lawyer. Maybe he/she can guide you on how to approach the situation. Maybe a mediator could also offer some help.

Fingernail Ripped Off Will It Grow Back

Wow, that really had to hurt! Nails will usually grow back if they have ripped off or were removed. However, the nail probably won't look the same as it used to, and it usually takes several months for it to completely grow back. Please keep the injury bandaged and watch out for any signs of...

How to keep red fox away from chickens?

Foxes are sneaky little creatures. They learn your routine and when your chickens are left alone. A hardware cloth perimeter may provide your coop with extra protection. You'll want to bury your fence at least six inches underground because foxes tend to dig under them to get in. Have you...

    Showing Cows

My daughter would like to start showing cows. I don't know much about this process at all. Does anyone know if we need to start with a young calf or if we can train an older cow? I think the experience will teach us both a lot, and it'll give us a special opportunity to bond.

How would You Rate Your Vet?

I would rate our vet about a 7. He is knowledgeable and helpful. The thing is, it's hard to get in to see him when it's an urgent matter. That has led us to having to take our cat elsewhere on occasion because the office didn't have any available appointments for a week or more.

Do You Have A Plan B?

I'm a full-time farmer and hope I won't ever need to do anything else. However, I do have some experience in sales, so I'd pick up a sales job if things were to go south here.

Getting Cat to Eating Fewer Carbs?

I've been doing some research and found out that a lower-carb diet is best for diabetic kitties. I also learned that pate canned cat food has fewer carbs than the ones with gravy. But my old guy doesn't really like pate. He loves gravy. And he loves kibble, which is full of carbs! Any ideas for...

    Cows Express Their Emotions

Some people believe that animals don't have emotions. I am not one of those people. I'm glad this study lends some credence to that belief. If I have a cow for a long time, I get to know him or her and can tell how he or she feels.

How Many Gallons Is A Ton

A ton weighs 2,000 pounds. A gallon weighs 8.33 pounds. So, there are 31.75 gallons in a ton. Is there a reason you're asking about this?

Best apps for looking up calories?

I really like MyFitnessPal, too. I really like that its homepage shows you your recommended daily calorie count as well as how many calories you've consumed that day. The homepage also shows how many calories you've burned that day with exercise. Most fitness trackers can sync with it, which is...

Bringing a Barn Cat Into the House

I took my barn cat to the vet last week. His blood work showed high levels of glucose, so they had me bring him back for a fructosamine test. This test tells us the average level of glucose in the cat's blood over a two-week period. This value was also high, so the vet diagnosed my cat with...

    Background Noise for Cows

It's an interesting question, one I haven't given a lot of thought to. I have a little radio in the barn that I turn on while I'm doing the feeding and other chores in there. It doesn't seem to affect the cows one way or another.

    Benefits of organic farming

To be honest, we have not gone organic, but we would love to. Having pesticide-free crops would be beneficial in so many ways, not only to our health, but to the environment as well. The problem is finding alternative ways to keep predators from destroying our crops.

Will A Possum Eat A Kitten

Oposums like to eat both plants and meat. They mostly eat small creatures, like cockroaches, flies, frogs, rats, spiders, and mice. That being said, something is obviously getting your kittens, and it would be a very good idea to put them somewhere they can remain safe while they grow up. Take...

    Worried About Older Barn Cat

I have a barn cat. He's an awesome little guy. He's getting older, though. He's about 11 years old now. Lately, I've noticed that he's eating more and seems lazier than usual. I know it's natural for older kitties to slow down some, but I do worry about him. I am taking him to see the vet next...
