The short answer is yes. If the corn is above 20% they will help get the corn off the cob, below that you will be able to slow the cylinder down to lower the damage to the corn. Everytime I have run without the filler bars I have ended up putting them in.

Only time I used them was a very hard to shell variety.They do take more power.Was told more succecptable to cracking..I don't know.I have good luck running whole cobs and keeping cylinder full.I don't want to get rid of mine,but I'll likely never use them again.
