You're melting the tubes because the venturi at exhaust connection is burnt out and you are pushing hot exhaust into filter.Can't answer how long filter will run "disconnected"but would be better than present situation.In depth discussion about this on here a few years ago.Might be able to Google this site and find it.Good luck!
