Combines DEUTZ v8 oil consumption

Rule of thumb has allways been less than 1% of fuel used. Make sure you open vent on dipstick tube when checking and stick dry stick in for awhile prior to pulling and reading. Higher marks on dipstick are for checking after prolonged engine off (dots or lines on stick). lower marks for checking when engine just shut down. I wouldn't add unless on add mark. Sometimes keeping on full will just eat it down to a certain point every day. Might try another brand of oil if what you are using can't take the heat. Good luck

An air cooled diesel cylinder has to handle a temperature range from -40 F to 600 F while a water cooled one from -40 F to 212 F. That's why the piston and ring clearances are a little looser on an air cooled (to handle the temp range) and why they use a little more oil than a water cooled. This is also why the emmissons regulations killed the air-cooled diesel.

What kind of oil do you recommend. Is a good synthetic oil the way to go.

I was ready to try find a higher quarlity (likely synthetic) oil if these engines used excess oil. Never had to. No abnormal complaints of these engines using oil. We just use the normal oil we us in all other engines.
