Combines 860 power shaft removal

We had to remove ours last year, and it wasn't that bad actually. You have to remove the pulley prior to the shaft coming out. If it is a hydro, the pulley can be separated to make it lighter-BUT- mark both parts so you can install it back the same way so you don't end up with vibration issues. If you look on the backside of the cab, you will see the plugs that cover the holes where the shaft goes through. Try lots of penetrating oil with the puller on tight overnight. Then in the morning, use the heat- that should do it! Good luck!

That shaft is tapered. To remove the pulley, Install your puller, tighten it as much as you can, then hit the end of the puller bolt by using a long shaft as a punch through the holes in the cab, and a sledge hammer. The pulley should just pop right off. If it doesnt retighten the puller and apply heat as someone hits the punch. The whole unit can be removed tube and all, but only as a last resort it is much more trouble than it is worth. When you get the pulley off remove the entire shaft from the tube and make sure the pilot on the splined end is not broken off in the flywheel.

I don't think all 860s have a tapered shaft -- ours is an 81 model and I don't think it was when we took it apart a couple of years ago!!!! If yours is tapered, make sure U put locktight on it when U put it together!!!!

Thanks for the help guys. Put the pullers on it this morning and when we tightened it down it popped loose, with less force than we applied the night before. Guess the repeated heating and cooling did the trick. As we suspected the pilot on the end of the shaft was broken and the shaft splines and coupler were worn. Once again thanks for the advice. Happy and safe harvesting.
