At first glance, oceanic life and agriculture may not be the most obvious pairing. But when the Sea Research Foundation needed funding for its conservation-focused school program, the Monsanto Mystic site in Connecticut nominated it for a $15,000 grant to help kids draw connections between classroom learning and environmental issues.
The Sea Research Foundation was presented with a $15,000 grant from the Monsanto Fund at a presentation last month. The mission of Sea Research Foundation, a nonprofit in Mystic, is to inspire people to care for and protect the ocean planet through education, research and exploration.

The grant will provide the opportunity for local school groups to participate in the Sea Research Foundation?s conservation-focused program, Where the City Meets the Sea: The Long Island Sound Outreach Program.

?This program helps kids observe science in their everyday life and connect what they learn in school with what they see in the environment,? said Kelly Matis, vice president of education and public conservation programs. ?Classroom presentations, coastline visits and a trip to Mystic Aquarium provide opportunities to learn about Long Island Sound and its impact on their lives.?

David Somers, director of Transformation Technologies at the Mystic site, was excited to play a part in the donation.
