I guess that depends on your mechanical abilities, but in my experience, they're pretty straightforward to work on. We just fixed one of ours, the half-moon key had broken on the inside of the gearbox. Take the sprocket off the top. There are four capscrews on the bottom. If you remove those the shaft will come out the bottom, and then you can fix it! You have to remove the row unit from the head in order to get the shaft out the bottom.
