Combines 9860 to small

I can imagine the problems you had since had problems just using a 12 row 30 cornhead. Most of our loss was coming out of the rotors more than the shoe wehn wet corn and leaves caused some blockage of the grates. But you are right, the shoe seems overloaded and undersized with too much trash on it. With a few recent showers, we have some pretty green spots showing up.

It's not only with the 9860STS, it's with the STS in general. A friend of mine operates a 9610 and a 9750 STS, each with a 12 row cornhead. When each seems to be set correctly, with good grain samples and minimal loss at their respective comfortable ground speed per machine specifications, the 9610 avgs. less grain loss, day in day out, in all conditions than the 9750 they claim. Each has slightly comparable loss in high moisture but in dry conditions, the STS has far more.
