Combines Accelerator roller gears

Same happened on our R62 some years ago. The later R series have wider gears but there is not enough shaft length to fit these on the earlier R series. We replaced both gears as the broken teeth or the reason for the teeth breaking may have fatigued the OK looking gear teeth and further trouble could be in store if you only replace one gear. Reasons for the teeth breaking could be any of a number; ie; constant repetitive cyclic loadings, an object going through the accelerator rolls, mistimed accelerator rolls, stones thrown up by the wheels into the gear teeth and etc.

I was a little concerned about the cost in replacing both gears. I do recall that the Americans on this forum called them pricey. I know how much they sting you for the bevel spreader gears. I don't mind spending money when you have a good harvest in front of you. Funny thing is that they still wear out even in the small harvests we have been having these last few years.

My R62 started sounding like a rock crusher this fall in corn. When I checked it out there was sparks flying out from the accelerator gears. about 1_3 of the teeth were gone and going fast. The wear patern on the gears makes it look like they were not meshing deep enough. I loosened the bolts on the flangets and shoved them closer together before retightening. seemed to help alot. The price at Redwood falls was 160.86 each for the wide ones.

In 1995 gears were changed from 3_4 to 1 inch and roll shaft numbers did not change.Use in pairs and check tooth mesh.May have to loosen bearing flanges and shift to get a deep mesh.1 inch gearn is 71372595.Check gears on rh. side that drive distribution augers. Are augers setting up a harmonic imbalanceIJ

I have an old R50 and have the big gears installed. Takes a little swapping of sides best I remember. Will look close if necessary.

Our R52 also had the wide gears installed by the first owner of the machine. If I remember correctly, they didn't mesh 100% of the width of the gears, but more than the original gears would have.

Couple times I have heard ours tingle like a bell when I idle down and run the unload auger or to do a walk around with the thresher running. Just started in the last 100 hours or so. I wasnt aware they could be adjusted. How tight, cold or hotIJ What is the opinionIJ Thanks Gleamer

Hi Gleamer. We did the spreader bevel gears and when we got the quote for the cost there of there was much sucking in of breath and really made the eyes water! So down to the local scrap yards until we located a cheap PTO gearbox of a MF 585 pull type header, oops! combine! Got the very good steel gears out of the gearbox and some turning, hacking and welding made up a good replacement set in place of the originals.

As mentioned before be sure to check the condition of the gears on the RH side as they can move from the vibration from mistimed and_or missing teeth on gears on lH side and also check the setscrews if the gears don't look like they have moved as vibration will also loosen them. The acc. roll gears are hardened and we have seen where the hard surfacing has worn through and then the teeth are eaten immediately.(This may only be 3-5 teeth) We have also loosened and moved the flanges to get the gears to have a deeper mesh. The rolls are always trying to get away from each other and and a little wear on teeth makes this worse. Gears are expensive but I think having a deeper mesh will help prolong their life. I know on my 1994 R52 by the second year and second set of gears wearing out, I replaced the gears on the right side that drove the distribution auger with belt and pulleys of proper ratio. I know an R62 has two dist augers and will be different. With the gears on both ends of rolls it must have been setting up some vibrations, used to howl so bad people would stop me to tell me something was about to fly apart. Can't remember replacing gears on left side since. Only replaced new short belt once in last dozen years. Also runs sooooo quiet. Just my experience.
