Another Chinese Milk Scare

CNN is reporting today that another milk food safety scare has emerged in China, this one due to aflatoxin M1 contamination. The source of the contamination is likely feed.

Chinese officials claim none of the contaminated milk reached consumers, and has since been destroyed.

But the Chinese blogosphere erupted today, blaming both Chinese dairy companies and government safety inspections. Some of the bloggers said they would not buy Chinese milk again, and only buy foreign-supplied dairy products.

Dairy food safety is a hot button item in China. In a 2008 scandal, melanin-infected milk sickened hundreds of thousands of children, with six deaths attributed to the scandal. Twenty one people were subsequently tried and sentenced as result of the scandal, and two milk company officials were executed.
