I would think spiked bars will shred the straw more, a friend of mine in Scotland said his combine "ate" rotor belts in heavy crops with spiked bars. We have found Gorden bars help the straw(I don't work for Marvin) Also if the straw is a bit soft, it will be much better rather than very dead and brittle. If it is very dry you should be able to drop the rotor speed a bit which will help a bit. My humble opinion is unless you have a job for the spiked bars, I would take them out. We run with slotted grates, but I don't think keystocks would be much different!! If the crop is very dead any type of combine will smash the straw.
