Is there a way how to test an electric fence with a multi-meter? I'm trying to use what I have around the shop already, but I don't want to kill the multi-meter by frying it.
I'm not sure if you can use a multi-meter. You should probably use a voltmeter to be safe. Voltmeters are designed to test electric fences. Your readings should all be over 5,000 volts for a properly working fence.

Use the back of your hand and tap it. The shock will cause immediate fist closing reaction away from wire. Will tell you if shock is hot enough, meters only tell if on/off. Dont touch it with palm side, imagine the impact of grasping a hot wire!
TSC has a little light tester for around 5 bucks , when my daughter was little I paid her a quarter to test it for me after a while she got use to it and was no problem and do it for fun and grab other people ,, lol
