I've rotated my pig pen and naturally the ground is pretty sparse. I'm afraid to passively wait for the vegetation to recover since a heavy rain or two might send their waste into the pond. I also don't want the area covered in weeds that won't benefit the pigs nutritionally when they eventually rotate back around. What should I sow here?
Some folks consider them weeds, but red clover and sweet clover are good picks for legumes. If you prefer grasses, then rye or tall fescue are excellent choices.
We plant alfalfa and clover here. You are right, you want to get something in the ground if it's sparse. A heavy rain will surely spread the waste if you don't.
