Doesn't make much of a difference beyond personal preference as long as the strap gets through the ratchet and can be tightened.
That being said I prefer to have the strap enter the ratchet such that the tightened strap will be closest to the load being strapped down as I find it easier/preferable to pull the loose end out the back and hold it tight for the first few clicks of the ratchet.
