    Test Your Water Periodically

What a great reminder. It has been a few years since I had ours tested last. I'm going to make a note to get that done soon. It really is a good idea to do it every year.

    Adding to Our Chicken Flock

Yes, you should be able to house them together as long as there are enough resources (food, roosting spots, etc) for everyone. I'd keep an eye on them when you initially integrate them so you can be sure everyone's getting along.

    The Farmer's Dog Dog Food

Lately, I've been seeing commercials for the Farmer's Dog dog food on TV, so I went to their website to check it out. I entered all my dog's details, and they suggested some recipes for him. The ingredients look pretty good to me, very wholesome. I was wondering if anyone had ever ordered from...

Do you close livestock up at night?

We lock up our livestock up at night, too. It gets so cold at night during the winter months. I worry that if I let our animals roam, they would freeze to death. In summer, I worry more about our animals being attacked by predators.

How Long Is Pork Good For Frozen

You can store uncooked pork chops or roasts in the freezer for four to 12 months. Cooked pork should only be stored in the freezer for one or two months. Bacon can be frozen for one to two months as well. I'd write the date you put the meat in the freezer on the package, so you can keep track of...

    Blue Heeler Vs Red Heeler

As Marcelo notes, the only difference is the color of the dog's fur. They are all Australian Cattle Dogs (or blue heelers). Blue heelers come in both "blue" and red coats. They were developed to help herd cattle, so they are usually great dogs to have on a farm.

    Background Noise for Cows

Now that it's winter, and the cows stay in the barn more often, I wonder if they get bored. Do any of you keep a radio playing for your cows inside the barn? Do you know if cows actually enjoy the sound of people talking or music or if it annoys them?

    Do You Have Back-Up?

We back up our important business contracts, financial information, etc., but there are a lot of less important things we don't back up and probably should. I love the convenience of the Internet. We could certainly live without it, but it might be a little painful for me.

10 States with the Most Farms

That's interesting. Did the list happen to mention anything about which crops are most commonly grown in each state? Kansas didn't make the list, either. I wonder where we rank in terms of how many farms we have here.

What are you hoping to achieve in the coming year?

We would like to buy more land and expand our crop farming. We already grow corn. We'd like to try to grow soybeans and perhaps some wheat. We'll likely start with one or the other, but we'd eventually love to grow both.

Buying More Land for Crop Farming

My wife and I would like to expand our farm and begin growing more crops. We have about half of the money we need saved up. I was wondering if it would be better to take out a loan for the other half of the money and buy the land now so we can get it ready for this next year's growing season or...

    Growing Herbs

A lot of herbs are easy to grow, so pick out a few herbs you think you'll use and start a small garden with those. Basil, chamomile, and rosemary are easy to grow, for instance. You can always expand your garden later on after you get it going.

    New Rules for SNAP

It isn't right that the kids have to suffer. I understand that the SNAP program is supposed to be temporary to help people get back to work, but a lot of people who work cannot even make ends meet. I don't think this is the best way to help people.

    Starting a home greenhouse

A greenhouse would be perfect for growing plants year-round. I don't know much about them myself, but I've considered looking into it. I'd start out by learning everything you can so you can start to create a plan, including a budget for your greenhouse.

    Protecting Cattle from Predators

Anyone who has cattle knows the significant threat coyotes and other predators pose to them. The EPA has announced that it will allow the use of M-44 (cyanide) bombs to kill these predators. I understand the threat that predators pose to our cattle, but I feel like this is not an ethical or...

    Becoming more common?

It does seem like people are trying to grow more of their own produce and herbs these days. Even my friends and family who don't live on farms are trying their hand at growing things to use in their own kitchens. I think a lot of people want to get back to our roots.

    Real Vs. Fake Christmas Trees

We have an artificial tree here, but I, too, would love to give my kids the experience of having a real tree at least once. I think there's something special about having a real tree in the house at the holidays. I have fond memories of our real trees at Christmastime when I was growing up.

Practical Versus Fun Gifts at the Holidays

I was just curious to know if you give people gifts that are practical or fun? In other words, do you give your loved ones things they need or things they want around the holidays? I tend to give practical gifts, but my wife has been hinting she'd like something more "fun" this year. Maybe I...

Turning Barley Into Carbon to Heat Homes

I ran across some pretty exciting news that I thought you all might be interested in learning about. A new research study shows how barley can be turned into carbon for heating homes. This means that all the barley breweries regularly dispose of after making beer may be able to be used...

    Recipes Easy Cobbler

Wow, this looks so easy, even someone like me, who doesn't know how to cook to save his life, could make it! I think I'll try to do this sometime. My wife might get worried seeing me in the kitchen, though. Haha!
