We've decided to add some pigs to our small farm. After doing some research, we've narrowed it down to the Duroc and the Red Wattle. The pigs will be used for meat for the family, and if it goes well, we might start breeding and selling them down the road. Which breed do you think is best for a couple of novices?

They're both excellent choices. You should look at what your market will buy and whether there will be a lot of competition with other farmers. If you're going to need the pigs butchered, then check to see how the fees work. You'll likely have to pay two fees, a kill fee and a butcher fee. The kill fee might be a flat rate and in that instance you'll get more bang for your buck if you go with the larger breed. The other fee is usually based on the pig's weight. Check with your local butcher to see how they set their fees.
