    Cat shelters

I was looking for ways too keep my barn cats warm and ran across a list of both commercial and DIY cat shelters at the Alley Cat Allies website. Have you guys tried any of these? I've bought a couple of the commercial houses and disliked both of them. I'm surprised they don't get harsher...

    Debt traps

If I lived overseas I'd look into getting a loan through Kiva. I've made loans there (it's more a charity thing than a money earner) and the farmers were able to do amazing things with it. Kiva changed their platform at some point to include what they call Field Partners. Field Partners...

    Worst thing about pandemic

Distance learning is my biggest problem. My son is going to grow up illiterate at this rate. My husband and I are horrible teachers/tutors, though we keep plugging along. The teachers that he has are horrible at teaching online and keeping the students engaged, but they're excellent teachers...

    Age for gun

When the kiddo turns 18 and moves out. I'm not comfortable with guns in the house. I wouldn't want the liability of allowing my kid to own a gun, not even if he was a blessed saint. A paintball gun? Okay. Anything with bullets? No.

    Would you quit farming?

Quit and get out. I don't have a big appetite for risk. Then again, I'm unlikely to ever be in that scenario. I started small and kept my day job for the first year. I started with cut flowers and cheap plastic hoop houses before adding the greenhouses and buying a shop and machinery. It...

    Christmas bonus

I've cut mine down to $50. I had to choose between offering a nice Christmas bonus or a coronavirus package. The employees chose the coronavirus package which includes hazard pay, a health insurance stipend per quarter, and 60 paid sick days to be used for testing, isolating, and illness due...

    Sourcing rare seeds and plants

Where do you guys go to source rare seeds and plants? I have an exotic orchid supplier, but that's the company's only specialty and I'd like to branch out.

Beans... so many to choose from

Soybeans are a great choice! If you want to maximize your yield, get them into the ground as early as possible. Soybeans are photoperiod sensitive and will yield more if exposed to long periods of sunlight. They will produce pods until they're killed by frost. It's a very rewarding plant.

    Forage for pigs

Many varieties of clover will work and all are easy to grow. Try planting some red clover. It's full of protein and the bees also love it.

    Goat ear mites

If I'm not mistaken, I believe you practice plant breeding, which means you probably have a microscope on the premises. Take a sample by scraping the goat's ear and put it under the microscope. You should be able to see the mites moving.

    Crop rotation

I experiment more with my home garden that's just for the family than I do with the fields growing my cash crops. I know what will grow here and what will sell here, so I guess I'm kind of like you and it's just a matter of rotating the land.

    Different types of tomatoes

I love, love, love tomatoes! Try planting some cherry roma tomatoes in your garden next year. They will bear fruit throughout the season and the tomatoes are extra tasty in salads and sauces. You can also dry them out for a tasty snack.

    Cheaper to buy?

Corn is probably cheaper to buy than it is to grow, especially if eating organic vegetables aren't a priority. However, it's good to plant corn because it benefits the soil plus the stalks can be used like a trellis for climbing vegetables. It's cheaper to buy carrots than it is to plant them...

    Septic tanks a hassle?

We are looking to buy a property that we'll rent out for additional income. If we do this we'd be the landlords, so is it a bad idea to invest in a property with a septic tank. Are septic tanks a hassle?

    Stocking up?

What supplies are you all stocking up on for your livestock in case the coronavirus sends us spiraling again? I weathered things okay during the last two rounds of pandemic chaos, but I'd rather rely on preparation instead of luck this go-around.

    Adapting U-pick Operation

I don't run a U-pick operation, but from what I understand about the virus being outside limits our exposure. So you have less risk already. If you limit the crowd size and require masks then maybe it could work.

    Recipes Air fryer shrimp

That sounds delicious! How do you like your air fryer? I've considered getting one in the past, but I'm wishy-washy when it comes to making kitchen purchases and tend to put it off.

    Closing again?

There's a huge uptick in coronavirus cases again in my area. I own a busy shop. I don't think I'll be forced to close, but I'm seriously considering it if things get bad enough. I'm not sure how to determine when we've reached that level though. I'm leaning towards closing if there's an...

People don't want cheap COVID supplies

I actually never thought of that, but it's an excellent point. I never thought of my business as a boutique, but I'd say many of the locals do. I think you've probably nailed it. Thanks for the insight!

    Dehydrator or smoker

I would love to make my own beef jerky and smoked meats. If you own either of these, do you get a lot of use out of them? Is a dehydrator the more versatile of the two? The both seem pretty pricey, so I want to make a good choice.
