Perfect! Thanks so much for assistance. Those calculators are great and should help me make smarter decisions moving forward.
@MartyR, how unexpected, I would never think to check there. Thanks for the tip.
Friendliness. I used to offer to take someone's buggy back if I saw them struggling with little kids or if they were elderly and it was a long walk. People used to smile and nod and hold doors open for one another. I live in a small rural community now and they're really pushing the vaccine...
I created a "smart farm" with Raspberry Pi to monitor the health of my Durocs, and it stopped working when it got overheated. I simply shaded it with a bucket and a lawn ornament to get it running again. I haven't spent much on it, or I'd probably be more concerned. So that's my answer. Just...
Yeah, I don't think the variety matters that much either, unless @Mayfield is planning to save the seeds. Cucumbers are easy to grow, and the most common varieties aren't wildly different. How are your cucumbers coming along so far, vincenzosassone?
I grew up on a large vegetable farm. There are many reasons to hill up potato tubers, but the most important one is that you don't want the tubers to come into contact with direct sunlight. It will turn them green and increase the potatoes' solanine levels.
@MartyR, I wish you luck and I hope...
I don't suffer from allergies, but my wife sure does and that was one of our considerations when we moved. She takes allergy shots and all that stuff. We're in an environment with better air quality now, and it's made a big difference.
I raise pigs, but I haven't been able to find what I'm looking for, so I'm open to using another livestock calculator if I can adapt it. I'd like to find a tool/app/calculator/software/anything that will let me plug in the numbers to create the optimal set up. Like if you have 9 pigs you need...
You don't need it to go around all of your crops. Just the ones that are tall and vulnerable. If it's really bad, then protect the crops you most care about. And since it seems as though you don't live in a windy part of the world, you don't need anything permanent. It doesn't take a lot...
@OhSusanna, I've skinned and cleaned deer, rabbits, and fish before. I've ordered a meat grinder. I didn't think about that, so I'm glad you mentioned it. We definitely want sausage.
Challenging
We had a butcher nearby ready to take our pigs, or so we thought. It turns out that the pandemic doubled his workload and he's running behind. He's had to drop all of his small orders like mine. I can't say that I blame him. He needs to work with whoever can pay him the most.
Which vehicle type is the best for getting out in the fields without tearing up the land? It's been pretty damp here these past few days since we finally got some rain. My truck is doing a number on the ground.
I had a butcher set up to take my pigs, but he's not taking small orders anymore because the pandemic set him back. I guess my wife and I are going to do it ourselves. My plan is to shoot them, butcher them, freeze the meat, then...what do I do with the carcasses? I intend to use every bit of...
I wouldn't say that I'm worried just yet, since it'll be another few weeks before I have anything mature enough to pollinate. Still, it's odd that I haven't seen any bees. There's been a cold spell, so maybe that's why? How is the pollinator population doing in your fields so far?
Thanks, @vincenzosassone, for taking the time to help me and for coming back to check on how it's going. I appreciate the support. My Durocs are growing strong and healthy. I've learned a lot with this first batch.
I haven't heard about the beef drama yet, but I pretty much avoid politics, so maybe that's why. I think capitalizing on fear could backfire once the customers caught. The trick would be to jack up prices without explicitly making the claim that beef was about to be banned. I doubt many...
Are you hogging all the rain, @Gordyg? Here, the sky keeps turning dark and the clouds roll in, but it only sprinkles a little before letting up. It's been about three weeks since we've had significant rain.
I think I understand what you mean. You'd pour concrete around the inside perimeter of the fence to keep them from digging out. I bet that would work. I would try that solution if I planned to use the same spot year after year. Since I'm going to move them around each new breeding season to...
I've googled it to death and read article after article about it. I think it sounds like a huge scam, but since it's legal I figured I must be misunderstanding what it was about. Glad to hear I'm in good company.
@Desi, it feels like the next financial bubble if enough people buy into it.
I have several, but most of them came from family members that passed away. I use my Winchester rifle the most often. It's great for scaring away critters.
@vincenzosassone, I don't think this place is necessarily meant to be a United States centric forum. Several of our forum members come...
