I thought about doing something like that, @vincenzosassone, but I read that it leads to aggression and fighting. I didn't want any tails nipped or any other injuries. It sounds like you guys have good luck with it though. Do your pigs ever go outside? What kind do you have? Sorry to bug...
This is my first time raising livestock, but I applied a lot of the advice that I got here when I asked about fencing. Unfortunately, my Durocs keep getting out. I'm surprised that they can dig as well as they can considering their hoofs, but my Durocs keep going until they've rooted below the...
I keep seeing the acronym being bantered around in discussions about digital currency and digital works. What is this all about? Is it an investment vehicle? I tried googling, but the information went over my head.
Do you have a way to dry it out? If so, you could find a great recipe and make jerky out of it. That stuff lasts for ages and it's great for camping and hiking.
Farmworkers and domestic workers like nannies and housekeepers are excluded from the National Labor Relations Act of 1935. So the boss/owner would just fire whoever tried to unionize. It was a racist move by the politicians back then because most of those workers just happened to be African...
The chicken or the egg? Nah. I want to know whether you started with crops, with livestock, or with both at the same time, when you first started farming?
Do you hook an attachment to the ATV in order to move the snow? I clearly have no experience with such. It sounds like you had to push it a long way. I'm just glad you're okay.
Has anyone ever applied for one of the specialty block grants from the USDA? I'm just wondering how hard it is to get accepted. The application process won't start again until next year, but I'd like to be prepared as much as possible before then.
If you have invested a lot of money into your livestock or crops, then I'm sure they are. I know someone who grows ginseng and put a lot of money into getting started. Every one of his plants is embedded with a special microchip and if anyone digs it up, the smart alarm goes off.
Nagami Kumquats are probably the easiest to grow, and I believe they're the most popular variety in the United States. They are very productive trees.
I think they're best used in a marmalade or a liqueur rather than eaten as is.
We've just started our journey towards back to nature living as a family, so I'm into the blogs and articles about the lifestyle. I grew up on a farm that raised crops, but my parents were friendly with the pesticides and herbicides that I'm hoping to avoid. Anyway, have you guys ever heard of...
I'm just curious about whether the two descriptors are interchangeable. It seems like most of the blogs I run across with a homesteading theme, happen to have families that live in a remote location. So are they the same thing?
I'm going to start raising pigs soon and I noticed that the Duroc is a very popular breed. Yorkshire and Berkshire seem to take top spots too. All three are known for producing succulent meat.
Thanks for sharing, Newsbot. I read it to my kiddos and their eyes lit up. I agree with @GrowPro. It's awesome that these folks make the holiday special for kids.
We're experiencing this right now and yep, it's magical. I have reindeer and Santa prints to make on Christmas Eve night. It's been raining so I'm going to make their prints in the mud. I can't wait to see their faces on Christmas morning. It's not all good stuff though. I'm no fan of that...
If you haven't read my other threads I'm planning to get some Duroc or Red Wattle pigs soon. I know that pigs like to escape, so I want to set up a good system. Is hog wire the way to go? It sure seems expensive. If I use that type of fencing will I still need to make it into an electric fence?
@Holii, sorry about that. It made perfect sense to my adult mind, but maybe my explanation would upset a child. I meant no harm.
@BIGRED, I hope you guys have worked something out and that your kiddos are doing okay.
I had to give up on my soybeans last season. I lost them to pests. Many insects feed off these things and I didn't want to use an insecticide because I was afraid of hurting the bees. Definitely be on the look out for pests!
I'm planning to raise either Duroc or Red Wattle pigs next spring. I'd like to save on their food costs as much as possible. What should I plant to help sustain them?
